You only have to get a few things right. You only need to cultivate a handful of skills to be successful. Deal making, negotiating, non violent communication, prioritization: and you are going to win at the game of life. In a world where people expect immediate responses you have to let bad things happen constantly to have any agenda of your own and to get the big things done. It’s recognizing that to prevent all the feelings, all the problems, all the emotional breakdown is impossible. So effectively just saying “I’m going to accept the collateral damage and believe that what I am embarking upon is more important than minor or reversible problems and then forging ahead.”

⭓ Space Station Spiders Found a Hack to Build Webs Without Gravity
Spiders are capable of building typical webs in microgravity, so long as they have access to a light source, according to new research published in Science of Nature. In the absence of gravity, and hence a sense of up and down, a light source provides a frame of reference for the spiders. When a light source is available, spiders will weave their normal asymmetric webs and wait near the top for prey.
⭓ “Holy Grail” Metallic Hydrogen is Going to Change Everything
Two Harvard scientists have succeeded in creating an entirely new substance long believed to be the “holy grail” of physics — metallic hydrogen, a material of unparalleled power that could one day propel humans into deep space. The research was published in January in the journal Science.
⭓ Scott Alexander is alive.
I remember back to when I was a new college graduate, desperately trying to make sense of the world. I remember the sheer relief when I came across a few bloggers - I most clearly remember Eliezer Yudkowsky - who seemed to be tuned exactly to my wavelength, people who were making sense when the entire rest of the world was saying vague fuzzy things that almost but not quite connected with the millions of questions I had about everything. These people weren’t perfect, and they didn’t have all the answers, but their existence reassured me that I wasn’t crazy and I wasn’t alone. I was an embarrassing fanboy of theirs for many years - I kind of still am - and if my punishment is to have embarrassing fanboys of my own then I accept it as part of the circle of life.

👽 My latest YouTube video
This book is an incredibly useful read. “Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman!” is full of short stories from taped conversations with Ralph Leighton, Feynman’s drumming partner. It covers topics you would not think a physicist would be interested in, such as safe-cracking, bongo drumming, samba dancing, language learning, biology, and art.
