A Scientist Who Delights in the MundaneA professor of applied mathematics, physics, and organismic and evolutionary biology at Harvard University, Mahadevan uses mathematics and physics to explore commonplace phenomena, showing that many of the objects and behaviors we take for granted, and consequently give little thought to, are quite extraordinary upon closer examination. The complex dynamics behind a dripping faucet, the ways adhesive pads can fail, the cracking of mud ā these matters might seem unimportant, or even boring. L. Mahadevan disagrees.
Encouraging Reddit post for all creatives: āRead this if youāre concerned your idea has been done before and youāre feeling unmotivated.ā A reminder that āThe idea doesnāt matter nearly as much as the execution does. No one will have your taste, your mind, your unique perspective on the matter.ā
This week I only watched the 3 episodes of Queenās Gambit in full, only to fast forward the rest. The why? Predictable. Like most TV series nowadays. With each new TV show and movie added to an increasingly growing list, our brain is getting accustomed to plot structures and character specificities. I sometimes view movie/TV show watching as a skimming exercise, essentially speeding things up and getting only the golden nuggets out of it. The aesthetics are cool, having a decent storyline that is, ultimately, predictable. What I was really wondering is the correlation between the Queenās Gambit miniseries release (Oct. 23, 2020) VS. the rise of Chess on Twitch (video live streaming service) which started early this year. Can Netflix be that fast in terms of releasing a new TV show by following & sniping trends?
