Stuff I’ve been ingesting/digesting
::::Mental Rotation of Three-Dimensional Objects
the concept of mental rotation into cognitive science with what has become one of the best-known experiments in the field. With a simple experiment, Shepard & Metzler were able to shed light on how our brain manipulates mental images of 3D objects.
The Architecture Behind A One-Person Tech Startup
As grandiose as the title of this article might sound, I should clarify we’re talking about a low-stress, one-person company that I run from my flat here in Germany. It’s fully self-funded, and I like to take things slow. It’s probably not what most people imagine when I say “tech startup”.
Owning your data and your tools
As this is a post about self-hosting, I won’t start preaching (trust me, it’s hard for me not to) how you should consider switching from WhatsApp to Signal, Google Maps to OpenStreetMap, or how you should quit Instagram and Facebook. You’re creating a lot of data there, and they don’t do pretty things with it. Fuck, I’m already preaching. Sorry about that.

Facebook does not plan to notify half-billion users affected by data leak
(Reuters) - Facebook Inc did not notify the more than 530 million users whose details were obtained through the misuse of a feature before 2019 and recently made public in a database, and does not currently have plans to do so, a company spokesman said on Wednesday.

I suspect Discord wanted more than the rumoured $12bn, given that a really successful consumer social company can be worth a lot more, and it may also have been reluctant to become part of Microsoft, particularly given the whole focus is on enterprise software and building blocks for Azure.
Volvo plans electric trucks to be 50% by 2030
Volvo says it plans for 50% of its truck sales to be electric by 2030. Tucks are harder than cars (battery weight can get away from you, and you need longer range) and this is still nine years away, but it shows how inevitable the transition has become. This will probably be very lumpy - some fleets, cities and use-cases will flip much faster. ::: full link
